Souvenir State Plate Collector's - If you don't see the collectible State Plate you are looking for please check back often or let me know which State you are looking for. I go to sales just about every week and I am always buying souvenir state plates
to put in the shop. I have been asked the following question several times in the past few weeks: Q: I recently saw an article in Country Home Magazine that mentioned your store. It was a great article about state plates. I have many of my Mothers state plates she collected through the years. My question is, Can you eat on them? I've heard
they were only for display. But I've thought they would be fun to use when company comes. Everyone could have a different state plate for their meal. Thanks so much, A: Most of the glazes prior to 1972 contained small amounts of lead as did the paints used. As for the lead leaching into the food this depends on the food served... high acidic content foods will pull the lead out of the dish in higher quantities
than non-acidic foods. So don't serve tomato based or vinegary foods on them if you are concerned about it. Also don't place the dishes in the microwave as this causes leaching.
I use my antique dishes for holiday meals with no worries about this. I figure that we breathe and are exposed to worse stuff everyday so eating a meal off of beautiful antique plates once a year isn't going to do much harm.
I also don't wash these items in the dishwasher as all
dishwasher detergents contain bleach and it will fade the decoration. |
