Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak - Nov. 1958 - Pantheon Books please ask for photo Product Details   Published November 1958 by Pantheon Books Inc. 559 pages. Includes the poems of Yurii Zhivago. Translated from Russian by Max Hayward and Manya Harari. This amazing and hard to find book is in very good condition. It is a hardback with cloth cover with no dustjacket. The cloth cover is red with gilt and black text on the spine and the author's name in gilt on the cover. There is very minimal wear to the edges and minimally soft corners. The inside is very good. Pasternak's picture of the Russian Revolution, seen from the point of view of the intellectual Dr. Zhivago, with a political landscape changing from the lushness exhibited in Moscow before the war and the violent social upheaval that followed. Basis for the 1965 Academy Awards winning motion picture starring Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, Tom Courtenay, Siobhan McKenna, Ralph Richardson, and Alec Guinness. This book was completed in 1955, the novel was rejected for publication in the Soviet Union, and first appeared in Milan in 1957 in an Italian translation by Pietro Zvataremich. Doctor Zhivago's publication and acclaim in the West, followed by the award of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1958) unleashed a bitter official campaign against Parternak, forcing him to reject the award. This is one of my all time favorite books and a movie that I watch atleast once a year.
