A Basic Guide to Dating Edwin M. Knowles China

There were only two marks used by the Edwin M. Knowles China Co. during its first 25 years. The companies initials and the Knowles vase. The companies initials were only used for a few years beginning around 1904 and the vase was used from 1901 - 1948. For most of the period of time from 1901 through 1925 the vase was the primary mark used.

Ivory Mark on Vintage China Dinnerware

The use of the word "Ivory" in American china dinnerware marks first came into use in the 1920's. It is believed that the Sebring Pottery Co. aka American Pottery Works, was the first company to use the word Ivory in their marks. Their Ivory Porcelain was patented in 1925 and continued to be made through the 1930's and possibly even later than that.

By the late 20's most American whiteware companies had a product they marked Ivory, sometimes they jazzed it up with a special name such as "Royal Ivory", etc.

For the companies that survived through the Depression, the term Ivory was used through the 1930's and in some cases well into the 1940's.

A few of the companies that used the Ivory mark:

  • Edwin M. Knowles China Co.
  • Knowles Taylor and Knowles
  • Edwin Bennett Pottery
  • Sebring Pottery
  • Homer Laughlin Co.
  • Sterling China Co.
  • Lamberton
